From the President

I am humbled to be serving as your new Church Council president. I’m trying to fill very large shoes left empty as Chris Duhm completed two consecutive terms on Council. On behalf of Council, I thank him for faithful service rendered, and his willingness to guide me in my new role. Greg Sekula continues as Vice-President, as well as chair of the Call Committee. Janet Strachan also continues as Secretary of the Council.

Your Council is tasked with keeping the church functioning in good order, especially while we continue to search for the best person to be the next pastor at Holy Trinity. This year we will be concentrating on the church building, as it needs repairs in several areas. You will hear more about this as we address the challenges.

Of course the Council is working closely with the Call Committee. The Call Committee is anxiously awaiting an interview with a candidate in the next couple of weeks. Should the committee like the candidate, members will go to hear the candidate preach. If they are still impressed, they will introduce the candidate to the Council. With Council’s approval, a date will be set for a congregational meeting. Please keep the Call Committee, the Church Council, and the candidate(s) in your prayers.

Additionally, Council is working with our neighbors who are concerned about the many meetings that our church hosts. Some of these are largely attended and have an impact on the neighborhood. We are seeking to balance our ministries with the needs of our neighbors who we must also care for. Again your prayers are requested as we seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit in this matter.

Holy Week and Easter are quickly approaching. On behalf of Council, I encourage you to share this meaningful week of services with us. From Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem, to the Last Supper, the Crucifixion and the Resurrection, God is with us and calling us to be among the faithful followers for whom God sacrificed Jesus. The Holy Week schedule is elsewhere in this newsletter; please plan to attend as many of the services as you can. Pastor Jack DiMatteo will be with us for Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter services!

Lastly, I cannot resist commenting on attendance at Sunday worship. I know it has been a long journey without a permanent pastor in place. But it is a journey we are making, and our supply pastors give us a chance to hear God’s word interpreted from many perspectives. Sadly, recent attendance has been declining; I wonder if our supply pastors realize we have a vibrant congregation that will survive our pastoral vacancy. Please remember that worship is a vital part of our faith. Coming together to worship God each week guides our faith and makes us stronger as a community. I miss many of the faces I used to see, and I hope the joyous news of Easter will bring you back to your church home each Sunday.

First Fruits Giving
At the February Church Council meeting, it was agreed to continue First Fruits giving of our income to the NJ Synod for mission support. We have committed to sending $10,500 to the Synod for use as follows:

$5, 250.00: goes to the ELCA for churchwide mission support

$2,000.25: to Resourcing Congregations – support the work of Youth Ministry, the Assistants to the Bishop and much more

$1,031.10: to Mission Partners such as Cross Road retreat center, Seafarers and International House, the Philadelphia seminary, and several others

$ 983.95: to the Office of the Bishop

$ 511.35: for Mission Strategies for forming new communities of disciples, new leaders, new partners

$ 723.45: for fiscal and property management – running the Synod office and Synod-owned properties

Thiel College Choir Concert
The forty-voice Thiel Choir from Thiel College in Greenville, Pennsylvania, a college of the E.L.C.A. will participate in evening worship at 6:00 p.m. Saturday, March 5, 2011 at St. Timothy Lutheran Church, 395 Valley Road, Wayne, N.J. 07470. They will also present a concert following the worship service. The performance is part of the Choir’s 2011 spring choir tour.

The choir, under the direction of Dr. Michael Bray, and including Vickie Boyer (niece of Scott and Debbie Jones) will perform a variety of sacred a cappella works by various composers as well as arrangements of spirituals and folk songs and hymns.

There will be no admission charge; however, a freewill offering will be taken.


Nutley Churches Music Concert
Sunday, March 6 at 3:00 p.m. at Vincent United Methodist Church.


Bach Vespers
The Grace Festival Choir is singing J.S. Bach’s Cantata No. 1, Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern (How Lovely Shines the Morning Star) at Grace Lutheran Church, Teaneck on March 6 at 4:00 PM. The choir of 35 singers, with professional soloists, is under the direction of Carol Weber and will be accompanied by a professional Baroque orchestra. The cantata is sung as part of a Vespers Service and an offering will be received. (The Jones family is not singing this time!)

NJ Synod Annual Conference
The NJ Synod’s Annual Conference on Congregational Ministries will be held on Saturday, March 19, 2011. It will be held at the Steinert High School, Hamilton Township, N.J. from 8:00am – 3:30pm.

This years’ speaker is Kelly Fryer, of “a renewable enterprise, inc. (are)”

Registration is $10.00 plus an additional $5.00 for lunch. Registration forms must be postmarked by Friday, March 11 by mail OR by Tuesday, March 14 if registering online. Please let us know if you would like a Registration Form, or you can download one from the Synod website at www.njsynod.org. Put the date on your calendar and plan to attend with a group from Holy Trinity!

Together we fight hunger.
Together, we gave $72 on Sunday, February 6th as part of the Souper Bowl of Caring. The money has been sent to support the local feeding programs in our community. The national total so far is $8,512,263 collected by 10,317 participating groups. Together we do more!

ECO-Palms for Palm Sunday Worship
For this Palm Sunday we ordered “Eco-Palms” direct from Lutheran World Relief. Eco-Palms give more money to palm harvesters and protect the environment. This means more children finish school, families can afford healthcare and the forest will continue to provide income for generations to come.

Food Drive

Food Drive
We have been notified by the Montclair-Glen Ridge-Nutley Chapter of the Red Cross that the Nutley Red Cross Food Pantry is in need of food. While this is an ongoing need, it is especially important in March and April. The Feinstein Foundation Challenge through which $1,000,000.00 is distributed to participating food pantries is based upon the quantity of food and money collected during these months. Basically, the more food and money that is collected, the more money the Red Cross receives from the foundation.

Meet Jim

Every afternoon for the past 10 years, 88-year-old Jim Freeman hears a knock at the door. A smile comes over his face as he walks to greet a volunteer from Mobile Meals, who is holding a warm, nutritious meal. Sometimes a nurse or a chaplain is there too—just to check on him. On his birthday, he receives a birthday card and cake.

Jim’s wife recently passed away after a 22-year battle with Parkinson’s disease. His two adult children have moved away. So it is just Jim and his dog, Brook, who occupy his home in Spartanburg, South Carolina.

Jim, like many of the 600 people served by Mobile Meals each day, lives below the poverty level. “I have no income other than my social security,” he says. “When I crunch the numbers, I realize that without this [help] I would not eat the way I do.”

As Jim ages, volunteers pay careful attention to his dietary needs—adding vitamins, limiting salts, increasing fluids—whatever it takes to keep Jim healthy and free from hunger. “We are feeding God’s people,” says Ralph Gillespie, a Lutheran volunteer. “And that’s what ELCA World Hunger is all about.”

Worship with thanksgiving together with people of all faiths at 7:30 p.m. at St. Mary’s Church. In this service, we thank God for all the blessings we enjoy as a community, and to remember in prayer those who are in need. The offering supports the Red Cross Food Pantry. Additionally, you are encouraged to bring a gift of non-perishable foods for the pantry.

November 28th – First Sunday in Advent
“A Call to Watchfulness.” This liturgical year begins and ends with passages from Jesus’ “end times” discourse in Matthew 24-25. This is a fitting way to bracket the year of Matthew, since Matthew is written to a community of disciples to encourage greater discipleship. In this discourse Jesus emphasizes watchfulness and being busy at work while awaiting his return. As we begin the year with Matthew 24:36-44, we are called to watch—Jesus’ return is unexpected. At the end of the year we are given, in the parable of the sheep and goats (25:31-46), a story of how we should “watch” and wait: service to humanity. It sums up the general nature of our call in the world.

In Matthew 1:23 (Advent 4), we learn that in Jesus “God is with us” (or Jesus is “God with us”). This phrase explaining the name Emmanuel is an addition by Matthew from Isaiah 8:10 to a citation from Isaiah 7:14 (“and you shall call him Immanuel”). The point is that Jesus is the one in whom God is made present and known. Commissioned and empowered by Jesus, we are the vehicle through which God and God’s kingdom are seen and experienced in the world, just as Jesus was the one in whom God was made known to the world. Discipleship is not our endeavor; it is evidence of Jesus’ presence in and among us—“with” us.

In Our Community

In Memory…
Edith Carol Hewitt, an artist known for her wood inlay paintings of landscapes and historic homes, died Saturday, Oct. 9, 2010, in Manchester. Working with chips of painted wood, she meticulously captured the detail and spirit of the buildings and surroundings of her native New England. Later, she worked in other mediums, including oils, watercolor, and ink.

She had come to Holy Trinity in the 1950’s and her “Jesus with His Disciples” banner has hung in the Holy Trinity sanctuary for nearly forty years!She is survived by her sister, Virginia Pooley of Newton and her husband William Pooley; daughter, Wendy Mitchell of Bronx, N.Y. and her husband Clesont; her son, Paul Hewitt of Old Tappan and his wife Lori; and her daughter, Elizabeth Blanda of Philadelphia, Pa. and her husband Andrew. Her grandchildren are Melissa Martin, Alycia Melendez, Julia and Lily Hewitt, Amelia and Addison Blanda; a great-grandchild, Julius; and nieces, Cheryl Williams and Rachelle White.

Our sympathy and prayers are with the family of Neil Johnson after hearing of his death. Neil has been remembered in our prayers for many months and he was the father of Kevin and Brian Johnson. “I am the resurrection and the life. We will again be collecting for this organization which provides food, clothing and other necessities of life for the homeless, hungry and the other “invisible” children and adults in our community.

As you make the change to fall and winter clothing, why not put aside the items you no longer need or want? Also collected will be any kind of household items including electronics and furniture.

A definite collection date will be announced at a later time.

ELCA World Hunger

When Wogayehu’s husband died, she wasn’t able to plow the fields and plant crops by herself. Without income from the farm, Wogayehu couldn’t afford to send her children to school. Without enough food, they often went hungry.

The gift of a goat helped Wogayehu get back on her feet. The goat produced several quarts of nutritious milk each day. The goat’s natural fertilizer helped grow a small vegetable garden outside her home.

Little by little, Wogayehu saved up enough money from selling milk and vegetables to buy a cow. With her new cow and some agricultural training, she was able to plow and plant her fields again. She says The Lutheran World Federation program in her community—which provides assistance with livestock, agriculture, microfinance, water, education and health—changed her life.

Today, both of Wogayehu’s sons are in school and she is working to build a new home for her family. Furthermore, she and other widows have found that in learning new skills they have overcome some of the prejudice that women once faced in the community. They’ve proven that women, too, deserve to be treated with respect.
“We have come into the light,” Wogayehu said with a smile.

Please call the office at (973) 667-0256 if you would like an order form mailed to you.

The cost of each plant is $8.00, and the order deadline is Sunday,
December 5th. Plants are in a 6 ½” pot and foil wrapped.

Plants may be taken home following the 7:30pm Christmas Eve Service.
